HISTORY OF THE SHIPS NAMED
ASPRO

USS Aspro (1943 - 1962) SS-309
 

The first Aspro (SS-309) was laid down on 27 December 1942 by the Portsmouth (NH) Navy Yard; launched on 7 April 1943 and commissioned on 31 July 1943. The submarine held shakedown training in the waters off Portsmouth, NH; Newport, RI; and New London, CT. After completing her tests and trial runs, she sailed on 17 September for Pearl Harbor. Aspro arrived at Pearl Harbor on 18 October and immediately began preparations for her first war patrol which would take her to waters around Taiwan and Sakishima Gunto.
Aspro won seven battle stars for her World War 11 service.
 


 

USS Aspro (1969 - 1995) SSN-648

The second Aspro (SSN-.648) was laid down on 23 November 1964 at Pascagoula, Miss., by the Ingalls Shipbuilding Co.; launched on 29 November 1967 and commissioned on 20 February 1969.
