Fast Attack Submarines The U.S. Navy’s nuclear-powered fast attack submarines (SSNs) are highly capable, multi-mission platforms. U.S. SSNs remain the most effective anti-submarine warfare (ASW) platforms available to counter advanced diesel and nuclear-powered submarines operated by potential adversaries. Since the end of the Cold War increased emphasis has been placed on non-ASW missions. The current backbone of the U.S. Navy's attack submarine force is the fast, heavily armed Los Angeles class submarine. A total of 62 were built. The first 31 carry 25 torpedo tube launched weapons including Mk 48 torpedoes and Tomahawk cruise missiles. The next 31 carry 12 Tomahawk vertical launch tubes in addition to the armament noted above. The last 23 of the Los Angeles class, called “Improved 688’s,” are quieter, incorporate advanced combat systems, and are configured with bow planes and a reinforced sail for under-ice operations. The Navy began building the Seawolf class attack in 1989 and was commissioned in September 1996.. They are the fastest, quietest, and most heavily armed fast attack in the world. The new Virginia (SSN-774) class attack submarines will achieve the right balance of combat capability and affordability. (Compiled from: The Submarine Centennial Log)
Fleet Ballistic Missile Submarines Strategic nuclear deterrence has been the primary mission of U.S. nuclear-powered fleet ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs) since their inception in 1960. SSBNs are the nation's most survivable and enduring nuclear strike capable platforms. The USS George Washington (SSBN-598), commissioned in 1963, conducted the first submerged launch of a ballistic missile. President Kennedy observed the launch and stated: "Once one has seen a Polaris firing, the efficacy of this weapons system as a deterrent is not debatable." SSBN construction continued, and the "Forty-one For Freedom" fleet ballistic missile boats (FBMs or Boomers) ultimately included ships of the Ethan Allen, Lafayette and Benjamin Franklin classes. The Ohio class, first commissioned in 1981, replaced the aging FBMs built during the 1960’s. The 18 Ohio class, known as Tridents because of the missiles they carry, are each capable of carrying up to 24 ballistic missiles (SLBM). Tridents are the sea-based "leg" of the U.S. strategic triad - bombers, land-based ICBMs, and SSBNs - and account for more than 54 percent of all U.S. strategic assets. The first eight Ohio class carry the Trident I C-4 ballistic missile. The remaining ten Ohio class carry the improved Trident II D-5 ballistic missile. (Compiled from: The Submarine Centennial Log) |
